The WhIP Journal eNews [What Helps In Practice!]
Welcome to the August 2007 issue of The WhIP Journal!

September is a great time of year! Full of the promise of great things, change, and renewed passion.

For me, September is like a New Year beginning. For one thing, it's the time to welcome a new school year. Growing up, school was always a positive thing for me at all levels and it is has been for my kids as well. This year I'll be bringing my son to University for his first year, and my daughter will be in grade 8. They are both looking forward to a 'new year'.

I also think of the September as a 'new year' for business. Many businesses experience the 'slow down' of summer as their clients are away and most people have had some form of vacation or time off during the summer, which hopefully means you come back feeling refreshed and reinvigorated. I love seeing people who are ready to jump back into their business with a renewed passion.

It's a time, in my humble opinion (IMHO), to review and reassess your goals, plans, and vision. Perhaps you had set out some goals and plans last January and this would be a good time to see if they still apply, how well you're doing in working towards them, and whether some new goals and plans are in order.

Regards,
Debra

SO LONG SUMMER, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

In my last couple of eNewsletters I've encouraged people to take some time during the summer slow down and vacations to spend time thinking about the growth and direction of their business for the Fall. This is the time to re-commit and/or re-invent your goals, plans, and vision.

My ideal plan is what I call the BIGGER FUTURE plan (coined from a great business coach, Dan Sullivan). Essentially what that means is creating a future that is bigger than your past, not letting apathy, habits, and routine dictate your future.

-A format that I find works really well is this:
90 day Goals, 12 month Plans, and 3 year Vision.

In each area make sure you cover things such as Overall Business Strategy, Finances, Marketing, Sales, Operational, Team, as well as personal items including finances and family issues. Make sure all of your items are challenging, but attainable and most important that they are something that inspires you and motivates you.

Accountability and follow up is key to any plan. You would, of course, review your goals in 90 days and re- write new ones for the next 90 day period. All of your goals, plans, and vision should have an element of flexibility so that you can make changes if they are warranted and worthy. It helps if you have someone (or a group) who will share in this activity and provide mutual accountability.

-What are your SWOT's (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats)? This is a great exercise to perform as an individual and as a firm. It will help give you insights as to what kinds of activities should be included in your 90 day Goals, 12 month Plans, and 3 year visions.

I'd love to hear from anyone who is working on making this Fall their best season ever!
