Fun and Kindness Overflowing, This Tax Season
Be Generous and Kind
Do you remember in the movie "A Christmas Carol" when
Scrooge wakes up after his night with the 3 ghosts, and he's
so full of joy and thankfulness that he can't stop giggling
and laughing (not to mention dancing around the room)?
He spends the day (and the rest of his life) overwhelming
people with his generosity and kindness, saying 'I don't
deserve to be so happy". That's what I want for each
one of you - the joy of being in a position to give some fun
and kindness overflowing to those who work with you this Tax
Season.
Have Fun
I know, some of you are thinking that I've lost it....how
can I say 'Have Fun' and talk about Tax Season in the same
breath. You think that they can't exist together, that all
fun is officially on hold until sometime in May (and were
not even sure about that either). Just because you're very
busy (okay, even extremely busy) doesn't mean you can't have
some fun. What about bringing some fun activity to the
office for your team?
-Buy a bunch of helium balloons (maybe even a hundred) and
set them free in the office. What a great, fun atmosphere
that would make!!
-How about slipper nights when everyone is working late? It
would add some light-hearted fun, to an otherwise dreary,
tedious work night, to see 'Bob' the quiet accountant wear
some zany Sponge Bob Square Pants slippers, don't you think?
-How about Stress Breaks where you get to race remote
control cars around the office or setup a small putting
drive on a long corridor?
The possibilities are endless!
Take Time Off
Unless you actually 'commit' to take some time off, it
probably won't happen. So commit right now! It's really
worth it. You will reap tremendous benefits (and
productivity, by the way) by taking off a long week-end, or
a day, or even an afternoon (if that's really all I can get
you to commit to). You know it's true. You've said it to
yourself before, haven't you? You know, deep inside, that
this crazy, unrelenting pace we keep at Tax Season is
counter-productive and destructive. You know that you suffer
the effects from it through most of May with intense
burnout. So many accountants wear their Tax Season 'busy-ness'
like a 'badge of honour'. I'd like to see everyone reading
this (myself included) to break that habit and become more
like happy, thankful Scrooge who has a renewed appreciation
for life and time to enjoy it.
Stay Healthy
During Tax Season, many people (not all, but many) become
exhausted, run-down, and generally unhealthy. You become too
busy and too tired to worry about good eating habits and
fitness. So here are some ways to help yourself and your
team:
-provide healthy food and snacks, whenever possible. If you
bring in dinners or lunches try not to make it always pizza.
Source out healthy alternatives for some variety. Bring in
snacks like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other low sugar or
organic foods to keep energy high.
-encourage fitness. Allow time for people to work out at
lunch or go for walking breaks whenever they need it.
-Provide bottled water for your team to drink throughout the
day. In addition to the usual 1-2 (max) coffee or tea
provided, also make herbal teas available.
Appreciation
Don't forget to speak and show your appreciation. A kind
word or deed can make such a difference!
Have a wonderful, generous, fun Tax Season!
