OVERWHELMED OR UNTAPPED BRILLIANCE -
Which Describes Your Current Situation?
If you talk to many people, these days, you’ll hear and sense that there is a general malaise in people’s lives. What does that have to do with accounting, you may ask?
Talk to many accountants and you’ll hear and sense a feeling of overwhelm, frustration, and isolation. Many accountants are already under the weight of ‘tax season’ pressure. They’ve already begun to make quite a number of preparations for the busy time. They’ve already started to feel weary and burdened.
Too much information; too much to do; too much to know and learn and keep track of; Too little time!
To reconnect, to recharge, to re-evaluate.
Everything is on a tight schedule and we face deadlines everywhere we turn.
Expectations are high and demands on our time, our expertise, and our soul are unrelenting.
There isn’t any place to breathe and grow and be!
You may be reading this and thinking this is all too glum for you. It’s a New Year and you’re ready to face it with excitement and energy. You may be one of the few who is feeling hopeful, empowered, and confident about your future and the future of accounting in general.
We need more of you. We need more people speaking up about the possibilities and opportunities to work with clients of all shapes and sizes and industries. To make a difference. Perhaps you’ve set some bold, specific goals for the year and you’re already seeing the benefits of your commitments.
You’re brimming with untapped brilliance and looking for every opportunity to make a difference and help contribute to someone else’s success. Excellent!
However, if you or your team members are lacking energy, purpose and joy in what you do, it’s time to ASK Questions and Look for ANSWERS!
What can I do to break the cycle of malaise in my life or for my team member?
How can I lead others when I can’t hear my own voice trying to lead me?
Why am I always working hard and getting nowhere?
I’m the picture of success, but there must be more than this?
I’m stuck in a rut and I don’t know how to get out. It’s too late.
How can I design a supportive environment?
How can I use my strengths and interests?
How can I eliminate some tolerations?
“..I came to the realization that I was marking time,
that I was living in a closet of my own making,
a small, tight, breathless closet called My Life,
and I had closed the door behind me,
thinking at the time that I was living in the real world.”
Michael E. Gerber, eMyth Mastery
Do you relate to this at all?
Do you think you’re the only one? You’re NOT!
Believe me. You may not hear colleagues and friends talking about it, but,
trust me, you’re not alone.
You may be what I’m calling the “WALKING DEAD”.
(Nothing gory or anything like that. The reference is from Michael E. Gerber, “The insufferably walking dead, shuffle, shuffle, shuffle in an airless closet we call Life.”)
People who are the “Walking Dead” are potentially YOU,
the people you care about, or the people you hire.
If this sounds silly to you, I assure it’s not!
Is it ‘different’? YES, that‘s the point! No one really talks about this.
If it doesn’t appeal to your sense of style or thought, please bear with me.
I can’t be all things to all people (it’s ‘taking’ 40 years to learn and accept that),
although I sincerely try to add value and reward your reading time each and every month.
If this DOES resonate with you, what you need to do is take action!
FOR YOU: follow your dreams, find purpose, ask for help, talk about it, try to break free and make your life what you want it to be.
FOR SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT: Look for the signs, ask questions, give your support, encourage them.
FOR SOMEONE ON YOUR TEAM: There are many things you can do to help. Time and space prevent me from providing an adequate discussion in this forum.
In brief, it begins with your hiring practices and continues through team building, leadership, communication, performance reviews, time management, work/life balance, professional development, reward and recognition, core values, and stress management.
Mostly, I urge you to be aware of it because there are human beings who are hurting, and, then secondly, your firm can be affected by it.
A person can be the Walking Dead for many years, you know. Life is too short.
