LAZY, HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER – Who has time for it?

Ah, those lazy, hazy days of summer you always hear about. The pace is slower moving, there is a gentle breeze in the air, with distant sounds of children laughing. The clink of ice in tall glasses, or the feel of a sweating beer bottle in hand. Blue skies with a few puffy white clouds. Pool splashing sounds are not too far away.

Deep sighs. Peace. Relaxation. 

OR how about the real scenario that many of us lives with?

A full workload, visiting relatives, too many BBQ invitations (to host and attend), the kids need extracurricular summer activities, you really want to get a few golf games in, and you’re picking up extra duties before your own vacation to accommodate other vacation schedules. 

Deep sighs. Stress. Burnout..

Most of us want to find more TIME and not just in the summer months.

What we want to do with that time will vary greatly.

Some of us will want to find more time so we can enjoy, we can relax, and we can golf more or go to the cottage more. Generally we want a life and we want it abundantly. That’s not to say we don’t enjoy our work, many of us thoroughly enjoy our work, we just believe that the reward of our hard work and dedication should be the privilege of more balance in our lives.

For some of us, the need and drive for more time is so we can improve our productivity and chargeable hours. We need to get more done in the limiting 24 hours allotted each day.  We have too much to do and not enough time to do it in. Working IN our practice takes time away from working ON our practice and we don’t have time.

Well I can’t give you more than 24 hours in the day (it’s beyond my powers of wishing and making it so) but I can discuss one area of your practice that is probably taking a lot more time than you know or realize and costing you more money. Your information technology!

The time that you and/or staff and/or outsourcing technicians spend on maintaining, updating, backing up and purchasing your systems is probably a lot higher than you know, even if you detail these costs. Some of the costs are easy to identify, others are not. Most people do look at many outgoing costs on their IT, but not the loss of revenue from time spent with viruses, spam, crashes, updates, backups, etc. Every hour (or part of) that you or your staff spend on these technology issues, you are not charging a client or building your practice. That’s a real cost!

Also, according to Symantec Canada’s recent survey on PC Etiquette and Security, Canadians rank viruses, low performance or system crashes, and spam as their top causes for unruly stress.
