Cultivating
Passion and Greatness During the Summer
Does the following calendar of events sound familiar to many
of you?
Let’s say it’s the month of December and many of you have
either,
a] begun to consider what decreases you will make to your
projects and firm/team building activities for the next
couple of months, or
b] already ceased any projects or firm/team building
activities other than working long hours for the next few
months.
The cessation of these activities will go on until ‘after
tax season’ sometime, which might mean some time in May,
well not likely. Okay maybe June, hmmm, no, too many other
deadlines to work on. Perhaps July or August, no, no, we
really don’t want to take on any ‘new’ projects or
activities during the summer. Well, let’s talk about it in
September.
So for some firms, the possibility of new projects or
firm/team building activities is limited to four months of
the year, at the most, when you finally begin to consider
options in September. That is if you don’t begin to feel
overwhelmed in September with all the tasks that have been
waiting for you.
This kind of scenario might suggest that you need to
rekindle (or find) your passion for what you do. When you’re
passionate about your work it’s very difficult to not pursue
it, because you enjoy it so much. Actually, it pursues you.
It won’t let go of you and you respond to it.
Passion can actually thrive in the summer months more than
any other time.
You have the opportunity to work hard and play hard (‘hard’
in this context means with enthusiasm and commitment). This
provides a great model for how passion flourishes in
people’s lives and how a balanced work/life can actually
make everything work much better.
Your formula for PASSION!
The balance of working hard, with time spent rejuvenating
and enjoying life, then working hard and passionately again,
and so on, creates the fertile environment of creativity,
energy, enthusiasm, enjoyment, commitment, ideas, risk
taking, and joy.
I suggest that this model shouldn’t just be for the summer,
that it should be all year long. Those of you who have
worked towards this goal, know that I’m right because you’ve
seen all the benefits to creating more balance in your life.
Where is your greatness?
In many work environments today, you find people who are
tired, overworked, stressed, and overwhelmed with everything
they’ve been told they need to fix or improve. To encourage
your passion to rekindle and burn bright, you need to focus
on what you do well, areas where you shine and thrive, and
where you have great strengths and opportunities.
You’ll find that Greatness and Passion are the very best of
friends.
